Good time had at Celia’s
Good time had at Celia's yesterday - she has this amazing garden - it's very long and thin and each ten feet or so that you go through it, it's like a different garden. And she has a pond which is full of frogs at the moment, which is very cool - they don't mind if you stroke their heads. Unfortunately, on the way home, the car in front hit a cat that was running across the road (and just kept driving - bastards), and although I know there's the logical part of me that hears all that "you should drive over it too, to make sure it's not suffering" advice, there's a much stronger part of me that can't bring itself to do anything of the sort. And then I feel guilty that if it spends hours in agony before dying it's my fault....
Catastrophes 'R' Me part 2 - one of the flats across the road from mine was on fire this lunchtime. I saw the smoke and initially thought someone's barbeque had got out of control, then the smoke got thicker and I heard the fire engines, and just as they got there, huge flames broke out from the roof. The flames were particularly sick-making for some reason - I think it's the first time I've ever actually seen someone's home on fire. I went out and came back three hours later to find the fire people (three engines) only just leaving, so it seems to have been pretty serious.
I swear that one of
I swear that one of these days Iím going to rename this site Insomniac Nights. I was awake until gone 4am last night ñ itís no joke.
Celia is 55 years old today, so weíre just about to go and join her for a small celebration.
It’s been weeks since ChrisR
It's been weeks since ChrisR created the "Powered by Pollard" icon for the PollardPortal version of his site, and said that I could use it, and I've finally got round to adding it to my template (see below). The man's mind is somewhere on that fine line between genius and madness. This *is* a compliment, honest
I could only wish that my mind was anywhere near it.
I may shortly be able
I may shortly be able to add something else to the 'Stuff I'm enjoying/TV' list on the right, as I've just discovered that Channel 4 will shortly be starting to show Will and Grace... I've never been able to work out why they didn't pick it up ages ago - it's a very natural fit there. I found it when I was living in New York, but never managed to see it regularly, so I'm really looking forward to it. It's slightly dodgy in its white, middle-class exclusivity, but very, very funny.
I had an unexpected lunchtime
I had an unexpected lunchtime break at the Tate Modern today - I haven't even been in before, despite having been past a million times (minor exaggeration). A few weeks ago, as part of a 'thank you for letting me stay in your flat for six months' present, Chris bought me a membership, of which I've been meaning to take advantage, and as I was meeting Celia, also a member, it seemed an opportune moment. There's a wonderful members room on the 6th floor with a terrace overlooking the river, and it was absolutely blissful. Recommended.
Iíve just been to collect
Iíve just been to collect the keys to the new office ñ and allís right with that particular part of the world ñ itís a good feeling, having something that concrete to demonstrate to the world that we mean business.
Iím by no means a fashionable person myself, but on the tube this morning, I was sitting opposite a man who was wearing a pink and white checked shirt, with a pink and blue polka dot tie, black pin-stripe trousers, black shoes, and pink socks, and even I feel this must be a bad ideaÖ..
The final detail I noticed on this man is that he was wearing a wedding ring, which means that his partner must have seen him off when they went their separate ways this morning, knowing what he looked like, and probably smirking hugely, which just confirms most of the things Iíve always thought about relationshipsÖ..
Dave is awaiting an operation,
Dave is awaiting an operation, which is now going to be tomorrow, so I haven't visited yet (as I thought it was going to be today, and he'd be unconscious....)
I've been trying to get my head round a number of things recently about how I've tended to balance (or not) the various aspects of my life. I've always thrown myself heavily into my work, for instance, often at a cost to my personal life, relationships, even health. I'd started to move away from that way of behaving, but suddenly, here I am starting up a company which I have a pretty vested interest in seeing thrive. So I'm starting to see long days, short nights, and stressful times on the horizon. And I knew that this was likely when I went into this, but for some reason it's only just started to seem so imminent. Maybe Dave's accident is also working to strengthen my sense of my own mortality and the ongoing desire not to have spent my life doing nothing but work.
