Networking
Courtesy of Dave and some leftover kit, I now have the fixings of a new network for the flat, which before long will be running wirelessly. I mention this for the entertainment of those who've seen my flat and are amused by the idea of a wireless network in such a small space.

We have a semi-wireless (as in my flatmate is wireless, my boyfriend has more than enough wires for all of us and I can’t be arsed with the restrictions wireless brings) network at our place.
But be warned, the bandwidth gets eaten by strangers (we think) all the time.
Grrrr

So you’re not secured? Well there’s your problem right there.
There are already three wireless networks within range of the flat, and two of them are wide open.

darian, if you leave your network open people will use it, i certainly use other people’s networks as i stroll about town, and have specific software to allow me to do so…
the best thing to do is post access by mac address and add in wep encryption to protect (sort of) your data while it is transit.
if people are using your wifi network to surf they are likely to be looking around your network shares to see what is around too….

We’ve looked at encrypting it but to be honest it’ll be more hassle than it’s worth.
If anyone wants to set it up for us by all means pop over n I’ll make you a cuppa!
