Your first sentence there sounds like it’s straight off a modern-day BBC news report. Instead of saying, “Robert Altman is dead”, it would have to be “We’re telling you this, but someone else said it, and we’re just passing us on. Please don’t sack our DG because of it!”
I deliberately phrased it that way because it was initially listed as breaking news and I hadn’t seen other confirmation. I note that the linked article was subsequently updated to state a source for the news and give more detail.
